The 4th of July in Boothbay Harbor, Maine

We decided to spend a few days in Boothbay Harbor in order to partake in the 4th of July celebrations. We sailed most of the day on Sunday and arrived around dinnertime. We knew that it would be a busy weekend, so we decided to get a mooring at the Tugboat Inn Marina. Similar to most of the marinas in Boothbay, this marina also served as a hotel. In order to adhere to its namesake, the hotel was in the shape of a tugboat.

After doing laundry and taking showers at the marina, we decided to go to a traditional lobster shack for dinner. As we were heading to the dock, Morgan decided to take a swim in front of everyone that was eating dinner on the patio. She gets so excited about riding on the dingy that she balances on all fours on the very front. She managed to loose her balance, and she fell into the water at the exact moment that we were pulling into the lobster shack. Everyone on the patio was laughing at our wet dog.

The locals in Maine are extremely friendly, and we found this to be true at the Lobster Wharf. The owner talked to us for about twenty minutes, and asked us if we wanted a free mooring while we sailed up the coast. He gave us his phone number and told us that we could stay on his mooring outside of his house in Port Clyde. We ordered lobsters and mussels for dinner, and we were surprised when they pulled them right out of the water crate and put them in the steaming pots right in front of us. They were definitely the best lobsters we’ve ever had! We even had homemade blueberry pie for dessert. After talking to the owner, he told us that we could buy fresh seafood on location. Instead of going grocery shopping, we decided to buy our next couple of meals right there. We decided on lobster macaroni, swordfish, lobster bisque, and clam dip. Needless to say, we’re overly enjoying all this seafood.

On the fourth of July, we relaxed on the boat for a few hours (we didn’t have to get up early to get the boat going). Next, we went into town to see all the local shops and tourist attractions. We had a fun time looking at all the lobster memorabilia. We even bought a few tourist items ourselves. We went back to the boat anticipating fresh seafood and beautiful fireworks while lying in the deck hammock. Then the fog came in. We couldn’t even see the boats moored next to us! The disappointing announcement came over the loud speaker saying that the fireworks were postponed until tomorrow due to the fog. Therefore, Jared and I decided to have our own 4th of July celebration. Luckily, I was fully prepared with red, white, and blue beaded necklaces and sparklers. We wouldn’t be in Boothbay the following day, so I guess the sparklers will have to be the substitute for fireworks this year.
