Northeast Harbor, Mount Desert Island

Northeast Harbor is the largest harbor on Mount Desert Island, complete with the luxurious Asticou Inn at the head. This harbor is also home to the gardens in the Asticou Terraces; our first stop was to walk the beautiful nature trails and gardens overlooking the harbor. By taking a dingy to the pink-granite landing, you can walk a path from the water to the top of the hills. Rustic paths with gazebos lead you to the gardens designed by Joseph Henry Curtis in the early 1900s. Here is a picture from the top of one of the hiking trails:

After visiting the gardens, we had a lovely "Downeaster" dinner at a local restaurant, complete with lobsters, steamed clams, and blueberry pie.
