Castine, Maine

On July, 9th, we spent a quiet night in Pulpit Harbor, which is a small anchorage tucked behind the islands. We took a dingy ride around the coves with Morgan as our guard dog, and she managed to scare a harbor seal. We also watched a beautiful sunset in the entrance to the harbor. This is one of my favorite pictures of Morgan (she was watching the sunset with us):

On July 10th, we arrived in Castine, Maine. Before arriving, we managed to get pulled over by the Coast Guard, complete with flashing blue lights. Luckily, we were in compliance, and ended up chatting with them about their jobs. One of the guys told us that yesterday was their first time in two years to pull a living person out of the water! He said that most people perish by the time they arrive on the scene because the water is so cold :( Our first stop was Eaton’s Boat Yard to get fuel, which turned out to be an excellent place. We met a man named Cam who told us all about the area, and he even suggested that we use his mooring for the night. He also informed us about the fresh lobsters that are sold right off the dock. We definitely love lobsters, so we bought two of them for lunch. The boat yard employees allowed us to use a pot to steam them, and we ate them right there.

After placing the boat on our newly acquired mooring, we decided to tour the Maine Maritime ship, The State of Maine. Our tour guide was a current student, so she told us all about the students' requirements and summer tours on the ship. Jared talked to her about his experiences at Kings Point and shipping out on container ships.

Here is a picture from the ship’s bridge, looking over the harbor:

Castine is a small town, so it didn’t take us long to walk through the historic district and through the Maine Maritime campus. There were numerous mansions from the pre-revolutionary period that have been restored as well as the oldest continuously run post office in the nation.

We ended our city tour by having beer and pizza at Dennett’s Wharf. We also decorated a dollar bill to put on the bar’s ceiling. The waitress folded the dollar over a thumbtack and a silver dollar coin. When it was thrown to the ceiling, the dollar bill stuck into the wood. Therefore, if you ever visit Dennett’s Wharf, you can see our dollar bill on the ceiling :)

We also discovered that owl decoys actually work because Morgan was really scared of this one!
